Name: Rupert, Donald W
What did you dream of doing when you grew-up?
Not sure it was a dream, but I planned to design aircraft. It didn't happen. I ended up flying them instead.
Spouse or Partner Name: (Did they attend McArthur and what class year?)
Married Linda Grogg, McArthur 1966, over 42 years ago.
After graduating from UF and after President Nixon cancelled all graduate and occupational deferments, I joined the Air Force in lieu of being drafted into the Army. I went to pilot training in Lubbock TX, then onto F-4 training outside Phoenix AZ. I spent 4 years outside Madrid, Spain with 14 months of that time in Turkey. My next assignment was in Osan Korea, then became a Lead-in Fighter instructor outside Alamogordo NM. Next I was an instructor in the F-16 in Tampa FL, then an operational test pilot in the F-16 in Las Vegas NV. My next 2 years were on the Seventh Fleet staff on the USS Blue Ridge, home ported in Yokosuka Japan, where I spent little time. My tours in the desert started there and continued through my next assignment in Sumter SC. My final assignment was teaching 3-star generals and their staffs how to fight at the operational level of war. I retired in lieu of taking another command as a colonel, since it would have been back to Korea.
After retiring from active duty, I became a defense contractor doing much the same as I had done for the previous several years. Although my job has morphed, I've been employed by Jacobs Technology for almost 16 years. Linda and I had our 1st 2 girls in Spain and our 3rd in Tampa. All 3 married into the military. Our 8th grandchild is on the way.
